In Cuajiniquil, Costa Rica, I conducted an independent research project focused on the behavioral responses of American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) to distress calls. I used playback audio of juvenile conspecifics, Spectacled caimans, and humans to analyze whether crocodiles exhibited predatory or protective responses to any of these groups. The results reveal complex protective and predatory behaviors triggered by juvenile crocodile calls, mixed engagement with human sounds, and indifference toward caiman calls and white noise.
